Internationale kunstresidentie in de Bourgogne
Voor de uitbreiding van onze accommodatie en activiteiten in de Franse Bourgogne zoeken wij inhoudelijke, organisatorische en financiële deelname. De gezochte samenwerking vraagt een grote betrokkenheid bij de kunsten, bij onderzoek en reflectie en bij het selectief aanbieden van huisvesting, voor kortere of langere residentie-periodes. De samenwerking omvat het opzetten van het beleid en programma, en/of investering in het vastgoed, en/of hands on onderhoud, verbetering en bezetting van de accommodatie en/of peer-to-peer begeleiding van en samenwerking met residenten, die op uiteenlopende praktijken in het eigentijdse culturele veld kunnen worden uitgenodigd: makers en denkers en liefhebbers zijn allen even welkom.
Een eerste uitdaging is het vinden van een hypothecaire lening c.q. investering, onder welwillende voorwaarden, van maximaal €90.000. Zo’n investering moet in de private sfeer worden gezocht. Reguliere kredietverleners betrekken helaas het potentiële economische rendement van sociaal-culturele meerwaarde niet in hun risicoprofiel. Maar juist die meerwaarde maakt de door ons gezochte combinatie van inhoudelijke en financiële deelname winstgevend. In onze ervaring verzeker je alleen in enthousiaste betrokkenheid een investering die zich blijft uitbetalen — op ieder niveau.
De solide zekerheid onder het plan bestaat ondertussen uit drie kavels eeuwenoud historisch vastgoed in de Franse Bourgogne en in een eerste exploitatieopzet voor zowel de sinds 2006 in ons bezit zijnde, als de te verwerven opstal. We bevinden ons in Tannay, in het departement Nièvre, 688km onder Amsterdam, een kleine acht uur rijden, als het verkeer meewerkt. Tannay is via Parijs ook per trein bereikbaar.
Over de kavels
De eerste kavel bestaat uit ons hypotheekvrije huis, een voormalig café en wijnmakerij, van twee verdiepingen met zolder en tuin — lokaal bekend als ‘Café de Tannay’ [1], waarvan de restauratie in 2008 werd voltooid en dat ons sindsdien tot basis in de Bourgogne dient.

Het huis Café de Tannay logeert tot vijf personen in twee slaapkamers. Het heeft een ruime leefruimte met semi-open keuken, een omsloten stadstuin, twee badkamers en een gewelfde wijnkelder. De woonoppervlakte beslaat in totaal 125m2 over twee verdiepingen, plus een zolderverdieping van 66m2.
De te verwerven opstal bestaat uit twee bebouwde kadastraal gescheiden kavels. Het omvat een winkelpand met bovenwoning aan het centrale Place Charles Chaigneau, èn een werkplaats aan de er achter gelegen binnenplaats, waaraan ook het Café de Tannay ligt. De werkplaats is een voormalig schoenmakersatelier van twee verdiepingen, opgetrokken op de 9-10e eeuwse crypte van de voormalige kerkelijke bebouwing op deze plek. De unieke, meer dan duizend jaar oude, ondergrondse ruimte met centrale pilaar en vier kruisgewelven meet 52m2. Generaties lang bleef hij aan het zicht onttrokken, als uiteindelijk in onbruik geraakte particuliere wijnkelder.

De winkelverdieping op de begane grond met twee etalages aan het plein meet 51m2, de bovenwoning van twee verdiepingen meet in totaal 82m2 met een zolder van 40m2. De onafhankelijk aan de binnenplaats gelegen werkplaats meet in totaal 75m2, verdeeld over twee etages.

De exploitatie
Het project in Tannay richt zich op het faciliteren en presenteren van internationale hedendaagse culturele productie — eigentijdse kunst en reflectie — in een levende context van lokaal erfgoed, traditionele activiteiten en productie van sociaal-culturele betekenis. De kunstresidentie manifesteert zich in situ en door middel van publicaties in diverse media.
Een eerste (voorbeeld-)project bestaat erin de crypte te restaureren en open te stellen. Na aanpassing van de winkel dient deze tot ontvangst- en presentatieruimte waarin de artistieke omgang met traditie en actualiteit wordt aangeboden. De bovenwoning wordt ingericht als verblijfsaccommodatie. In combinatie met de bestaande logiesfunctie van het Café de Tannay herbergt het project initiatiefnemers, beeldende en schrijvende kunstenaars, kunstliefhebbers, verzamelaars, en cultureel geïnteresseerde passanten.
In de presentatieruimte wordt ook een algemeen publiek geïnformeerd over de activiteiten, kunstprojecten, over lokaal erfgoed en de betekenis die eraan kan worden toegekend, anders dan die van museaal object onder de consumptieve voorwaarden van de toerisme industrie. Een en ander neemt niet weg dat de ‘winkel’ ook een distributiecentrum wordt voor lokale geschiedenis en artisanale actualiteit. Onder andere de in deze regio traditionele wijnproductie kent een enorm actieve ‘niche’ productie, door een nieuwe generatie wijnmakers, met oog voor kleinschalig en duurzaam geproduceerde, natuurlijke en exclusieve wijnen.

De boven de crypte gelegen werkplaats biedt de mogelijkheid om het werk aan en in de crypte en de residentie te faciliteren en wordt ook publiekstoegankelijk. Met publicaties en presentaties, ter plekke en in een gemediatiseerde vorm — online, in drukwerk, in de vorm van kleine evenementen, etc. — wordt een breder geïnteresseerd publiek aangesproken.
In de context van onze vraag naar deelname voert het in dit stadium te ver om uitgebreid op het programma in te gaan. Het idee voor de samenwerking beslaat immers de volledige opzet en exploitatie. We staan danook nadrukkelijk open voor serieuze suggesties voor organisatorische en eigendomsconstructies, en voor het creëren en ‘verzilveren’ van toegevoegde waarde aan de unieke kwaliteiten en context van de betreffende ‘stenen’.
De stappen
Met een zeer bescheiden vraagprijs van €55.000, een geschat eerste verbouwingsbudget van €35.000 en met veel zelfwerkzaamheid en lokale expertise kan de verworven opstal in korte tijd exploitabel worden gemaakt. Winkel en bovenwoning worden opgefrist en van hedendaags comfort voorzien. De werkplaats wordt uitgemest en constructief verbeterd. Het eerste ‘publieke’ project omvat onderzoek naar de geschiedenis van de crypte en daaropvolgend eerherstel, èn de introductie van initiatief en programma.
Over ons
Barbara Weenink werd aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam opgeleid tot museologe en deed brede internationale ervaring op, op het gebied van tentoonstellingsorganisatie en -inrichting, zowel op institutioneel niveau als in een individuele praktijk van interieurontwerp en styling. Jouke Kleerebezem is beeldend kunstenaar, met een beeldende en publicerende praktijk. Hij was verbonden aan diverse kunstonderwijs- en onderzoeksinstituten en leefde goed ingeburgerd van 1999 tot 2009 permanent in de regio Tannay.

An international art residency in Burgundy
For the expansion of our accommodation and activities in Burgundy, France, we seek substantive, organizational and financial participation. The collaboration sought requires a strong commitment to the arts, to research and reflection, and to the selective provision of accommodation, for shorter or longer residency periods. The collaboration includes setting up the policy and program, and/or investment in the property, and/or hands on maintenance, improvement and occupancy of the accommodation, and/or peer-to-peer supervision of and collaboration with residents, who may be invited on the basis of a variety of practices in the contemporary cultural field: makers and thinkers and enthusiasts are all equally welcome.
A first challenge is to find a mortgage loan or investment, under benevolent terms, of up to €90,000. Such an investment must be sought in the private sphere. Regular lenders unfortunately do not include the potential economic return of socio-cultural added value in their risk profile. But it is precisely this added value that makes the combination of financial and curatorial, organisational participation that we seek profitable. In our experience, it is only in enthusiastic involvement that you secure an investment that continues to pay off — at every level.
Meanwhile, the solid security under our project consists of three plots of centuries-old historic real estate in French Burgundy, and in an initial exploitation plan for both the property owned by us since 2006, and the buildings to be acquired. We are in Tannay, in the Nièvre department, 688km below Amsterdam, just under eight hours away, if traffic cooperates. Tannay can also be reached by train via Paris.
About the plots
The first plot consists of our mortgage-free house, a former café and winery, of two floors with attic and garden — known locally as ‘Café de Tannay’ [1], whose restoration was completed in 2008 and which has been our base in Burgundy ever since.
The house Café de Tannay sleeps up to five people in two bedrooms. It has a spacious living area with semi-open kitchen, an enclosed city garden, two bathrooms and a vaulted wine cellar. The living area totals 125m2 over two floors, plus a 66m2 attic.
The property to be acquired consists of two separate built-up cadastral parcels. It comprises a store with upstairs apartment on the central Place Charles Chaigneau, with a workshop on the courtyard behind it (on which the Café de Tannay is also located). The workshop is a former two-story shoemaker’s workshop, built on the 9-10th century crypt of the former church building at this location. This unique, more than thousand-year-old underground space, with central pillar and four cross vaults measures 52m2. For many generations it remained hidden from view, as an ultimately disused private wine cellar.
The store, with two large windows facing the square, measures 51m2, the two-story upper apartment measures a total of 82m2 with a 40m2 attic. The workshop, located independently on the courtyard, measures a total of 75m2, distributed over two floors.

The exploitation plan
The project in Tannay focuses on facilitating and presenting international contemporary cultural production — contemporary art and reflection — in a living context of local heritage, traditional activities and production of socio-cultural significance. The art residency manifests itself in situ, and through publications in various media.
A first (exemplary) project consists in restoring the crypt and opening it up. After adapting the store, it will serve as a reception and presentation room in which the artistic evaluation of tradition and actuality will be offered. The upstairs apartment will be furnished as accommodation. In combination with the existing lodging function of the Café de Tannay, the project accommodates initiators, visual and writing artists, art lovers, collectors, and culturally interested passers-by.
The presentation space also informs a general public about the activities, art projects, about local heritage and the meaning that can be attributed to it, other than that of museum object under the consumerist conditions of the tourism industry. All the same, the “shop” also becomes a distribution center for local history and artisan actuality. Among other initiatives, the wine production, traditional in this region, knows a very active “niche” production, by a new generation of small scale winemakers, with an eye for sustainably produced, natural and exclusive wines.
The workshop located above the crypt provides the opportunity to facilitate the work on and in the crypt and the residency, and also becomes publicly accessible. With publications and presentations, on-site and in a mediated form — online, in print, in the form of small events, etc. — a wider interested audience will be addressed.
In the context of our request for participation, it would take us too far at this stage to go into the program in detail. Moreover, leaving details open suits our idea of a collaboration which covers the entire set-up and operation. We therefore warmly welcome any serious suggestions for organizational and ownership structures, and for creating and “cashing in” on added value to the unique qualities and context of the “stones” in question.

Steps to be taken
With a modest asking price of €55,000, an estimated initial renovation capital of €35,000 and with a lot of self-activity and local expertise, the acquired buildings can be made exploitable in a short period of time. Store and upstairs apartment will be refreshed and equipped with modern comfort. The workshop is mucked out and constructively improved. The first “public” project involves research into the history of the crypt, followed by its rehabilitation, and the introduction of the initiative and its program.
About us
Barbara Weenink was trained as a museologist at the University of Amsterdam and gained broad international experience, in exhibition organization and design, both on an institutional level and in an individual practice of interior design and styling. Jouke Kleerebezem is a visual artist, with a visual and publishing practice. He was associated with several art education and research institutes and lived permanently in the Tannay region from 1999 to 2009.
