What went before
Welcome back to the Studio
March 2010 the Café de Tannay undergoes a major refurbishment, including the addition of an extensive art, media and design library and thorough redecoration. Having been rented out intensively over 2009 some improvements could be made.
Also for its further development as a publishing artist residency we start to bring in some special publications, which otherwise might keep on traveling between Amsterdam and Tannay.
What went before
Tannay, 22 September 2008 — Only one week before the second anniversary of signing the contract to buy the property, to the returning curious we offer a major update of the studio log, while the renovation project reaches its first state completion. So what’s with the disclaimer?... a ‘first state completion’? Can’t we yet invite our friends and colleagues for its house warming? Or offer it to artists, writers and publishers as their studio-away-from-the-studio? Well, actually we could, we do. We opened another website to introduce the almost-finished place: cafedetannay.com and soon following artist residency information will be available.
However with all the shocking changes that have taken place since we started stripping the original building, in the ‘finishing’ we find plenty detailing only to be started. We render the place habitable, not completed. Also the café will now have to learn, as buildings learn, from its use, from its visitors, from our and other persons’ occupancy.
Every space of the house has been updated in this site and new spaces have been created: it deserves a full scan. The latest interior images however you find through a shortcut in the mise-en-scène chapter. As you can see we are ready to rent out.
Next updates will be gradual, show refinement, detailing, decoration — as with the proper house — adding reference, responding to feed-back, user intervention. So keep coming back. Or come over. By now you should know where to find us.
¶ Regelmatige bezoekers van deze site krijgen in september 2008 eindelijk een grote update, nu het restauratieproject de voltooiing van de eerste fase nadert. Een ‘eerste fase’ omdat we, met alle ingrijpende veranderingen aan de oorspronkelijke staat van het pand, in de afwerking voortdurend details ontdekken waar we graag aandacht aan zullen besteden. Het pand wordt bewoonbaar maar niet ‘kant-en-klaar’ opgeleverd. Het café zal moeten leren, zoals alle behuizingen leren, van het gebruik door zijn bezoekers, van onze bezetting. Om dat leerproces te bevorderen wordt het inmiddels te huur aangeboden, via een nieuwe website: cafedetannay.com.
Elke ruimte in het huis is op deze Studio site uitgebreid en geactualiseerd. Nieuwe ruimtes werden gevormd. De meest recente interieurfoto’s zijn in het mise-en-scène hoofdstuk te vinden. Daar is ook te zien dat we klaar zijn voor de verhuur.
Komende vernieuwingen van de informatie zullen vooral een verfijning en detaillering te zien geven — net als in het huis zelf. We voegen referenties toe en reageren op de reacties van gebruikers. Kom dus vooral terug. Of beter: kom langs.
Café de Tannay Studio is a project by Dutch artist Jouke Kleerebezem in which he expands on the restoration of a historical piece of property in France.
Café de Tannay was acquired by the SCI Le Moulin du Merle and is renovated by among others Claude Vejux, Driss Surig, Gilberthe Akkermans and JK. Aiming to investigate the future status and exploitation of the property, the web site for the moment functions primarily as a memory space and draft book. It also hopes to cater to a growing curiosity after the project. After the renovation will be finished (summer-fall 2008) other publications in print and on-line will follow.
Café de Tannay Studio anticipates a new appreciation of the artist’s studio, as a site disconnected (if only occasionally and partly) from an everyday economy of material, manufacture and meaning, in celebration of alternative conditions for fabrication, reflection and interaction.
¶ Café de Tannay Studio is een project van beeldend kunstenaar Jouke Kleerebezem waarin de verwerving (door SCI Le Moulin du Merle), de verbouwing (door o.a. Claude Vejux, Driss Surig, Gilberthe Akkermans en JK) en de toekomstige status en exploitatie van het Café de Tannay wordt uitgewerkt. Deze website dient vooral als schetsboek. Met de afronding van de verbouwingsfase (zomer-herfst 2008) zullen andere publicaties in druk en op het Internet volgen.
Café de Tannay is situated in Tannay, ancient wine town in the Nièvre department in the Burgundy region. As a result of the mid-19C Phylloxera epidemic all wine growing activity had disappeared from Tannay slopes. Since some years however production in the area is increasing and gaining reputation. The Caves Tannaysiennes and Domaine de Sarmentole (see links) produce several awarded wines. Also as a religious center Tannay had its importance, certainly since 1201 when the church founded a collégial, a collegial.
¶ Het Café de Tannay is gesitueerd in het voormalige wijnstadje Tannay in de Franse Nièvre, departement in de westelijke Bourgogne. Als gevolg van de Phylloxera epidemie van eind 19e eeuw verdween de wijnbouw zo goed als geheel van de hellingen rond Tannay, maar sinds een aantal jaren wordt de productie in het gebied met succes uitgebreid. De Caves Tannaysiennes en het Domaine de Sarmentole (zie links) brengen verschillende bekroonde wijnen op de markt. Daarnaast was Tannay ook als religieus centrum van belang, vooral sinds 1201, toen er een collégial (collegiaal kapittel) werd geïnstalleerd.
Today, Tannay is your typical French provincial town, two-and-a-half hours south of Paris, with the charms of a prosperous past under decreasing activity. All basic conveniences are still available: two bakeries, a butcher, pharmacy, several bars, two shoe stores, two hairdressers, a book store, a hardware store and a small supermarket at the edge of the town. ADSL comes in at 1, 8 or 18Mb/sec. Tannay has just under 600 inhabitants and is the administrative center of the ‘Canton de Tannay’. The French railways keep a bus connection going at least 4 times a day, and in the week-end one direct train from and to Paris, at Tannay-Gare. Most touristic interest is focussed around the river Yonne and cruising the Canal du Nivernais. The pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostella goes by Tannay, which is the first stop after Vezelay. National Park the Morvan is at 15 km.
¶ Tannay is een typisch Frans provinciestadje, met de charme van een florissant verleden onder afnemende bedrijvigheid. Alle basisvoorzieningen zijn nog aanwezig: bakkers, slager, apotheek, café’s, twee schoenenwinkels, een maison de presse/boekhandel, een kado-artikelenwinkel en een middelgrote supermarkt. Een ADSL-verbinding is tot 18Mb/sec. verkrijgbaar. Tannay heeft een kleine 600 inwoners en is het administratieve centrum van het ‘Canton de Tannay’. De Franse spoorwegen onderhouden er een aantal dagelijkse bus- (naar het centrum) en eenmaal per week een uit Parijs doorgaande treinverbinding (naar Tannay-Gare). De toeristische interesse richt zich vooral op de nabije rivier de Yonne en op de pleziervaart op het Canal du Nivernais. De pelgrimsroute naar Santiago de Compostella loopt door Tannay, dat de eerste pleisterplaats na Vezelay is. Het nationale park de Morvan ligt op 15 km. afstand.

The floors are accessed from the garden via a stone spiral staircase at the left side of the main entrance; it is one of the oldest parts of the house, dating from late 15C.

Whether you get out of the house via the small gate on the main street or via the common courtyard and porch, you find yourself in the center of the village. The house is situated in the bourg, the oldest part of Tannay.
