To inform your Café de Tannay project proposal a non-exhaustive and under development list of fields of interest and special attention issues is presented below.
Note that topics could be both practically and theoretically or even historically addressed, by artists, writers, designers, publishers, editors, agents, translators, programmers by any actor in contemporary publishing in old or new media.
To apply for a residency period always send a documented concise proposal first. If consideration and discussion result in our engagement we will with the applicant(s) further consider practical conditions, funding and various details.
publication concept and design / publishing strategies / the publications lifetime / publishing footprint
publication concept and design
¶ transforming raw data and prime artistic content into an edited narrative: how to deal with cultural production and its contexts in a shifting media landscape
¶ nuts and bolts of a publications design and execution: material, media, method, tools and technology (of reproduction and distribution)
¶ text and image relationships in new interfaces: typography, photography, illustration, (hyper-)media lay-out and architecture
¶ hybrid publication: experimentally combining print and new media, or different channels and timelines for a body of (serialized) publications
¶ time-based publishing: the publication not as a finished product but as a work-in-progress
¶ new developments in reproduction and distribution technology
publication concept and design / publishing strategies / the publications lifetime / publishing footprint
publishing strategies
¶ why publish in the first place: position and value of the publishing project within the curriculum and the body of work of the author/artist
¶ fine-tuning and catering content: the relationship between an author and his/her work, a medium and a publishing format or platform and a special interest or a general readership
¶ craft, collect, sample and edit: digital media are ubiquitous and publish in all directions
¶ personal publishing versus p2p or reader participation: single voice or multi-author publications and their editorial and technical conditions
¶ between self-publishing and social media: extremes of identification from first person confessional writing to anonymous or pseudonymous publishing
publication concept and design / publishing strategies / the publications lifetime / publishing footprint
the publications lifetime
¶ once a publication is out there where does it go or remain: on private and public (special interest) libraries and conservancies, archives, collections and how these can be accessed
¶ ...yet another publication lifetime concern: digital copies, file-sharing, copyleft &tc., suspended for ever between democratization and theft
¶ issues of material durability: publication decay and restoration; digitization or other conservation techniques
¶ compatibility in (interactive) digital media: format/platform and hardware dependence
publication concept and design / publishing strategies / the publications lifetime / publishing footprint
publishing footprint
¶ economy and ecology of contemporary publishing: which documents go where in which format, with which lifespan?
¶ outlines of a publishing house for tomorrow: between bookstore, library, school or press agency? How to link and/or bind authors, content and readers?
¶ editing out of a horn of plenty: authored and intentional as well as unintentional publications spill right into the media to never reach a saturation point. What is the editing agenda, if any, and what are its routines and tools?
¶ harmonizing many-to-many voices and recommendation: how to construct a (publishing) catalogue out of the work of disparate self-publishing authors to cater to a fragmented readership?
